Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Right Hon. Charles Yorke (1722 - 1770), attributed to Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), 1740s. A half-length portrait in painted oval, with long wig, brown coat, facing to right, of the second son of the 1st Earl of Hardwicke, who grew up at Wimpole Hall. He was MP for Reigate 1747-1768, and for Cambridge University from 1768-1770. He was also Solicitor-General (1756-1761) and Attorney-General (1762-1763 and 1765-1766), but died three days after being appointed Chancellor (like his father before him) in 1770. He married firstly Catherine Freman in 1755 and secondly Agneta Johnston in 1762. A later portrait of him at the time he became Solicitor-General in 1756 is also at Wimpole Hall NT 207788.
