Summary
A black and gilt japanned and brass mounted cabinet on stand, probably British or European, early 18th century. The cabinet with a pair of cupboard doors enclosing an arrangement of ten drawers and raised on a stand with square section legs tied by an X stretcher with an applied water lillie or lotus leaf.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Sir John Chester, 4th Bt (1666-1726) or his son Sir John Chester, 5th Bt (1693-1748), for Chicheley Hall, Buckinghamshire; thence by descent to Major John Greville Bagot Chester, MC (1925-2011); accepted in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Montacute, 2012.
