By descent in the Booth family at Dunham Massey, recorded in the 1769 and 1776 picture lists for the house; by descent to the Grey family (Earls of Stamford) at Enville Hall, Staffordshire; sold from Enville by Sir John Foley Grey, 8th Bt, 15 June 1928, lot 14; bought by the Savile Gallery for £1,995; purchased from the Savile Gallery and thence by descent until offered for sale at auction at Sotheby's, London, Old Master and British Paintings evening sale, 6 July 2011, lot 39; purchased by the National Trust for £157,250 with a grant of £61,328 from the Art Fund and with funds from Dunham Massey and from gifts and bequests to the National Trust.
