Summary
Bronze with black varnish mounted on a top piece of wood to resemble serpentine and shaped to accord with integral bronze plinth, Andiron incorporating winged male and female Satyrs, Putti, Harpies, and grotesque Masks, attributed to Niccolò Roccatagliata (b.Genoa, fl. Venice 1593 – Genoa after 1636). This andiron lacks it crwning figure but as ts companion had Jupiter, it is probable it would have been Juno but couls also have been Hercules as a Robert Adam drawing suggests. They were adapted as candlesticks for niches by Adam at the 3rd Earl of Bute's seat at Luton Park.
Provenance
Soranzo family, Venice; John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792); bought by Brinsley Ford from Gerald Kerin 24 January1965 (£200) and by descent to Augustine Ford. Accepted under the Cultural Gifts Scheme by HM Government from Augustine Ford and allocated to the National Trust for Osterley, 2023.
