Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady in Blue, attributed to Mary Beale (1633-1699). A three-quarter-length portrait in a traditional pose of Lely, with the sitter sitting within an interior space, with a red velvet curtain pulled to the right to reveal a landscape with trees and a distant mountain in the background. The sitter rests her right elbow on a simple classical base, and wears blue silk dress over white chemise, with a brown silk throw draped over her shoulders, and a pearl necklace around her torso. Her hair is tide back from her face, but is worn in ringlets on her shoulders, possibly indicated she is unmarried. She holds a single rose with a leaf in her lap. Gilded frame
