Caption
This painting, by an unknown artist, shows a perspective view of Greenwich Hospital from across the river Thames. A pathway in the centre of the picture leads our eye into the distance where the Queen’s House can be seen, framed by the Hospital’s two wings. Further away, on top of the hill, is the Royal Observatory. The foreground is dominated by action on the river; one large ship and two smaller ones fire a salute while nearby oarsmen look on. A small rowing boat casts a net into the murky water.
