Summary
8-day longcase clock, c1790-1810, in Yew case, signed 'Ja Jones Abergavenny' on the dial. The arched painted dial with Arabic numerals, date aperture and seconds subdial. Painted shell spandrels, nautical scene in arch with rocking ship automaton. The four pillar movement has anchor escapement, and rack-striking hours on a single bell. The hood has a craved broken swan-necked pediment centring on a copper-alloy ball and spike finial supported on detached reeded columns to each front corner with ebony stringing on the door. The trunk, beneath a horizontal panel of burr yew has attached reeded quarter columns to each front corner with ebony stringing on the door. The trunk, beneath a horizontal panel of burr yew has attached reeded quarter columns flanking the door which is decorated with ebony stringing and a central oval marquetry panel showing Britannia with a lion. The base also has quarter columns and ebony stringing above a 'French' apron and bracket feet. See W.H.2.
