Summary
Stained Beech and caned high backed chair, c1690-95. The caned tapering rectangular seat is supported on barrel-turned H stretchers and front legs, the latter joined by an arched front stretcher of pierced scrollwork above ball feet. The rear legs on replaced raked (compass) heels rise to form barrel-turned uprights with turned finials flanking the arched cresting rail of pierced scrollwork (part missing). The round-headed cane panel beneath is contained by uprights with simple linear mouldings. See W.F.62,a and c Here the narrow back indicates a period of c1685-1700, the arched top still contained within the uprights but, with the front stretcher, showing discipline of design giving a date of c1690-95. Underframing constructed in the Continental manner i.e. the turning of the stretcher ends tenon directly into the squared leg sections. Rebuilt, much restored.
