Summary
Stained beech and caned high-backed chair, c1695. The caned rectangular seat with moulded rails is supported on baluster-turned H stretchers and front legs with scrolls angled outwards ('turned on the corner') above ball feet, the raised arched front stretcher of pierced scrollwork. The rear legs on raked ('compass') heels rise to form baluster and barrel-turned uprights supporting the arched cresting rail of pierced scrollwork. The round-headed cane panel beneath is contained by wide plain uprights. See W.F.62,b and W.F.62,c. Here the narrow back indicates a period of c1685-1700, the arched top supported upon the uprights and the disciplined design of both it and the front stretcher suggesting a date of c1695. Underframing constructed in both Continental and English manners i.e. some stretcher turnings tenoned directly into squared leg sections (Continental) some squared to make the joint. Rebuilt, much restored.
