Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Jean Hamilton, Mrs William Conyngham (d. 1788), in the manner of Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), on back of canvas in ink: Mrs. Jean Conyngham/née Hamilton widow of John Hamilton of Castlefin wife of William Conyngham Esq. MP. A half-length portrait of a woman, turned to the left, gazing to the left, in white dress with blue ribbons at neck, sleeve and cuff, her hair dressed high and covered with a black mantilla which she holds to her breast with her left hand. A handwritten note inserted behind the stretcher reads, Jean Conyngham (formerly Hamilton) m Col. William Conyngham (1723-1784) 31.8.1775. Portrait by Sir Francis Cotes (see old Ulster Houses pg 101) 'Napier' also written on note.
