Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King William III (1650–1702), after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), 18th century. An oval painted head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, head turned to the left, gazing at the spectator in Garter robes.
Provenance
Reputedly presented by the King to Sir Albert Conyngham (d.1691) in recognition of his services to the Protestant cause, along with its pendant, No. 5 [although dubious, in view of the pictures lack of quality, but also in view of the very uncertain connection between Sir Albert and the Conyngham's of Springhill]; the first certain record is of George Butle Conyngham's bequest of them to his favoured second son, David, in 1765 (see An Old Ulster house, p.54); purchased by National Trust in 1957 from William Lowry Lenox-Conyngham (1903–1957), shortly before his death, along with the other contents of Springhill
