Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A View of Rome from the Janiculum with St Peter's and the Vatican, studio of Richard Wilson, RA (Penegoes 1714 – Mold 1782), circa 1753. This is a studio version of a pair of paintings of views of Rome executed for William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth (1731-1801) in 1753, the original of which is in Tate Britain.

Purchased by Antony Gibbs in late 1881 for £1000; purchased by the National Trust from the estate of the late George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (1928 – 2001) with the assistance of the NHMF, Art Fund and donations from members and supporters in 2002

Marks and inscriptions
Verso: On the reverse, a paper label situated centrally to the bottom of the frame, with the following printed, Frost and Reed, Bristol, Clare Street, London, 41, New Bond St., W1, Artistic Frame Makers, Established 1808, Fine Art Publishers, Picture Reparation, 5752, 21/5/51. Verso: Hand written in ink is the number 3949, centrally on the stretcher at the top. Verso: Hand written in ink on the the horizontal stretcher bar are the words, Landscape work, View of Rome, by Richard Wilson. Verso: Hand written in pencil on the top edge of the frame, the words Mrs Gibbs, Wilson, Frame. Another version of the same painting is in the Tate, London described, 'Richard Wilson (1713 - 17820), Rome: S. Peter's and the Vatican from the Janiculum (1753-4), oil on canvas, 1 x 1.39m'.
