Caption
This picture is much damaged and repainted, but it seems nonetheless to be an authentic work from later in Casteels’s career, when he was content to work to the level of expectation of his English clients. The house in the picture somewhat resembles Wimpole, where this now hangs. It seems that the Bambridges, who owned the house, probably bought this picture because of this similarity.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Peacock and Chickens, with a View of a House, by Pieter Casteels (Antwerp 1684 – Richmond 1749), signed with an indistinct signature – the area the bottom right is damaged and the inscription is hardly legible – but has the confident and characteristic calligraphy of Casteels, and the date: P. Casteels f / 1731 (or 1737 – caught up in the tail of the f ) (?), signed (?) bottom right P. Casteels f./1731 (?). The Bambridges probably bought this picture because the house resembled Wimpole.
