Caption

William Jones (formerly Langham) was made a baronet in 1774. He took the name of Jones after his marriage to Elizabeth, sister and co-heiress of William Jones of Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. This picture was bought by Mrs Bambridge apparently in the mistaken belief that the sitter was the son-in-law of the mathematician of the same name, who had been tutor and friend to the 1st Earl of Hardwicke.

William Jones (formerly Langham) was made a baronet in 1774. He took the name of Jones after his marriage to Elizabeth, sister and co-heiress of William Jones of Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. Bought by Mrs Bambridge apparently in the mistaken belief that the sitter was the son-in-law of the mathematician of the same name, who had been tutor and friend to the 1st Earl of Hardwicke.

Provenance

By family descent to Sir Francis Burdett, 7th Bt.; his sale, Sotheby's, 2 December 1953, lot 49; bought Leggatt, from whom acquired by Mrs Bambridge, for £300, in May 1960; bought by Mrs Bambridge in 1960; bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 - 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3,000 acres
