The offering of honeysuckle, a symbol of endearment, indicates that this unknown couple are man and wife. Bought by Capt. Bambridge in 1940 as a portrait of Horace Walpole and Kitty Clive.

Greville Charles Douglas collection, sold by executors of his widow, Lady Margaret Douglas (daughter of 4th Earl of Kenmare), Sotheby's, July 3rd 1940, lot 116 (via Permain for £ 500) for Captain Bambridge in 1940; bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 - 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3,000 acres
