Summary
A white-painted, parcel-gilt and gilt metal-mounted commode, South German/Austrian, mid-18th century and later. The serpentine painted top with moulded parcel-gilt edge above a pair of serpentine drawers between uprights carved with acanthus and cartouches and descending to cabriole legs carved with acanthus and terminating in scroll feet. The ends of the commode fitted with a small cupboard behind a serpentine cupboard door. The front apron carved with a shell amidst foliage between two lattice-pierced cartouches. The side aprons scroll-edged and carved with foliate sprays. Decorated with parcel-gilding throughout and with gilt brass Rococo handles and escutcheons to the drawers. -- Purchased by the Bambridge's as Bavarian in origin.
Provenance
Listed in the 1965 Wimpole inventory in the Drawing Room, and photographed there in December 1967 when illustrated in Country Life. Acquired by George Bambridge (1892 - 1943) and Elsie Bambridge (1896 - 1976), who purchased Wimpole in 1938. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Elsie Bambridge.
