Summary

Henry Flitcroft (Twiss Green, Cheshire 1697 – Hampstead 1769). Section north / south through the chancel showing the reredos at the east end of the new church at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire: No. 7, c.1748, inscribed 'No.6', 'Section of the East End', signed 'H. Flitcroft', pen and ink with grey wash (442 x 273mm), scale given, watermark.

Full description

Flitcroft agreed 'To make an Altar Piece of Deal, to be carved and painted, with the Commandments'. The altarpiece, itemised separately, cost £57, of which the joiner's work accounted for £16, while that of the carver and painter amounted to £26 and £15 respectively. Although the architectural framework to Flitcroft's reredos is elaborate, with its simple Decalogue, flanked by the Lord's Prayer and Creed, it is severely orthodox in comparison to the one designed by Gibbs for the house Chapel, and its only nod to imagery is the Trinitarian triangle hovering above its centre. Catalogue entry adapted from David Adshead, Wimpole Architectural drawings and topographical views, The National Trust, 2007

Provenance

Sir Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, Lord Chancellor, PC, FRS, (1690-1764); bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3000 acres.
