Summary

Henry Flitcroft (Twiss Green, Cheshire 1697 – Hampstead 1769). Section south/north through the nave and north chapel (dotted), showing the gallery at the west end of the new church at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire: No. 6, c.1748, inscribed 'No.6', 'Section of the West End', signed 'H. Flitcroft', pen and ink with grey wash (438 x 270mm), scale given, watermark.

Full description

The squat Tuscan columns supporting the 'Lord's Gallery' and its Ionic order were replaced in the late nineteenth century by piers capped with stiff-leaved Gothic ornament whose 'elephantiasis' left Niklaus Pevsner 'bewildered'. Flitcroft contracted to 'make the Collumns, and Pillasters and Architrave over The Pillars, the Galery Front, with Balisters, and to Wainscot round the Walls of the Galery, to the bottom of the Windows, with good Yellow Deal'. The seventeenth-century roof of the Chicheley chapel, which Flitcroft shored-up, can be seen in section on the right-hand of the side of the drawing. Catalogue entry adapted from David Adshead, Wimpole Architectural drawings and topographical views, The National Trust, 2007

Provenance

Sir Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, Lord Chancellor, PC, FRS, (1690-1764); bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3000 acres.
