Summary
Tapestry, in wool and silk. Flemish, made c.1575-1700. It shows a kneeling woman presenting a crown to a standing male figure holding a sword. Other figures crowd around and an army can be seen in the background. The borders are composed of floral decoration interspersed with small figures and narrative scenes. Previously identified as showing David and Abigail, but this seems unlikely as in the Old Testament story Abigail offered David food carried on donkeys, not a crown. Possibly shows a scene from the life of Alexander the Great or Cyrus the Great who were both popular subjects for Flemish tapestry series.
