Summary
Floor tile - Design 37 - Fragment - The tile has an inscription band with the D of Deo Gratias. Above the band is a sgrafitto like dragon facing left. The dragon is toothy with a large ear. There is an indistinct area of tile due to wear. However stray limbs, wrapped around tail and wings can be seen. The design is backwards as the slip is the background. The glaze is olive green over the body and yellow on the slip. The fabric of the tile is hard and fine. Part of a 16 tile set with designs 32, 39 and 40. Early 16th century, possibly 1520s. (Group B – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile fragment is the top left corner of the design. The fragment is in very good condition. The majority of the slip is present and nearly completely covered in glaze. Glaze covers the body of the tile. At the top of the fragment are areas with a bubbled appearance and texture. There are patches of glaze on the original outside edges.
