Summary
Oil painting on panel, Francis Knollys the younger (1553-1646) (after Cornelius Johnson), British (English) School, circa 1630. A half-length portrait, the sitter turned half to his left in black cloak, great white ruff, black fitted hat with white lace edge and with a white beard, against a dark background. Framed in gilt coloured wood with leaf and berry design in corners.
Provenance
By descent in the Knollys family to last direct descendant Laetitia Battisson (nee Durham), d.1788. By whom willed to her cousin, Rev. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) and then by descent to John Arthur King Martyn; by 1958 in the collection of Sir Francis Knowles (1915-1974); Sotheby's 30 January, 1974, Lot 156 when purchased by the children of Sir Hugo and Lady Elizabeth Brunner of Greys Court, by whom exchanged with a painting with the National Trust in 1975.
