Summary
Painting. An oil painting on canvas, half-length portrait of Captain Edward Hughes (1716–1794) wearing a blue naval jacket, trimmed with gold braid, a telescope in his right hand and a bicorne hat under his left arm, by Violante Beatrice Siries (1709 -1783), 1761. He faces to the right, wearing a powdered wig. Within a plain, moulded, water-gilded oak frame, with beading on the site edge. Previously thought to be Captain George Stoney, RN (b. c. 1749 - 1784).
Provenance
Part of the collection on loan to the National Trust from Newport Museum and Galleries. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
