Summary
Painting. An oil painting on canvas, three-quarter-length seated portrait of Jane Colchester, Mrs Thomas Morgan (1703 - 1767) wearing a loosely-draped white dress, against a dark background, attributed to Francis Cotes, RA (London 1726 – London 1770), c1750/60. Jane Colchester was the wife of Thomas Morgan of Ruperra and Tredegar. The sitter's face is turned to the right, her left arm resting on the chair back, her hands loosely clasped.
Provenance
Part of the collection on loan to the National Trust from Newport Museum and Galleries. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
Marks and inscriptions
2 x newport museum & 1 x Cardiff museum label on reverse. 'Vicars Bothers' Label, and '2-0' written on top stretcher bar.
