Summary
Painting. An oil painting on panel, full-length female allegorical figure of Abundance or Summer, semi-clad in yellow with her chest exposed, (after Quellinus), c1674. Abundance (as seen in Cesare Ripa's Iconologia), although previously called Summer, stands in a landscape with floral garlands in her hair and carrying a floral wreath in her right hand. She holds a cornucopia in her left hand. After an engraving by Hubertus Quellinus (Antwerp 1619 - Antwerp 1687), published in 1665-1668, after sculptural figures by his brother, Artus II Quellinus (Antwerp 1609 - Antwerp 1688) in the Vierschaar (High Court) in Amsterdam Town Hall.
Provenance
In situ in Gilt Room since 1675; part of the collection on loan to the National Trust from Newport Museum and Galleries. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
