Summary
Painting. An oil painting on panel, full-length standing female allegorical figure of Temperance (after Quellinus), wearing a white top-less dress and flowing black drapery, British (English) School, c1674. Temperance (one of the four Virtues) stands in a landscape, pouring wine in to a goblet held in her left hand from a jug held aloft in her right hand, diluting the wine with water. After an engraving by Hubertus Quellinus (Antwerp 1619 - Antwerp 1687), published in 1665-1668, after sculptural figures by his brother, Artus II Quellinus (Antwerp 1609 - Antwerp 1688) in the Vierschaar (High Court) in Amsterdam Town Hall.
Provenance
In situ in Gilt Room since 1675. Part of the collection on loan to the National Trust from Newport Museum and Galleries. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
