Summary
Oil painting on panel (oval), The Triumph of Religion and Spirituality over Lust and Intemperance (Spiritual Figures departing from Kingdom of Silenus) (from part of The Glorification of Pope Urban VIII's Reign), English School, c1675, after Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596 – Rome 1669). A ceiling painting after part of engraving by Cornelis Bloemaert II (1603 - 1692), published by Hieronymus Tetius in 1647, after Pietro da Cortona in the Palazzo Baberini showing one of the scenes on the cove of the vault over the Salone, with Triumph of Divine Providence (1633-39) showing Pope Urban VIII's [improbable] conquest, through his piety and wisdom, of Lust and Temperance. Lust is represented by a naked female figure surrounded by winged cupids, Intemperance by Silenus, father of Bacchus, god of wine, all watched over by Wisdom.
Provenance
In Gilt Room since 1675. Part of the collection on loan to the National Trust from Newport Museum and Galleries. In March 2012 the National Trust took over the management of Tredegar House with its contents and its 90 acres of gardens and parkland, from Newport City Council for a period of 50 years.
