Summary
Floor Tile - Design 13 – The depicts a heraldic design, with a stag trippant (facing right) between three phaeons with a bordure engrailed, and stylised flowers in each corner. These are the arms of Archbishop Parker of Gloucester Cathedral. The fabric of the tile has straight sides or only a very slight bevel, plus a light green/yellow glaze over the slip and dark olive glaze over the body. (Group C – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile is badly worn on one side of the tile, but the other retains much of its slip and green/yellow glaze. There are small patches of glaze on three sides of the tile. The reverse of the tile is slightly damaged on one side making the tile thinner, most likely as a result of lifting or removing the laid tile. Some mortar still remains adhered to the back.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
