Summary
Floor Tile - Design 13 – The depicts a heraldic design, with a stag trippant (facing right) between three phaeons with a bordure engrailed, and stylised flowers in each corner. These are the arms of Archbishop Parker of Gloucester Cathedral. The fabric of the tile has straight sides or only a very slight bevel, plus a light green/yellow glaze over the slip and dark olive glaze over the body. (Group C – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile is badly damaged or has intentionally had the corner broken off, cutting off the feet of the stag. Small hints of green from the glaze can be seen but the surface is badly worn and around half the slip remains. A large amount of mortar remains adhered to the sides and back of the tile.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
