Summary
Floor Tile - Design 13 – The depicts a heraldic design, with a stag trippant (facing right) between three phaeons with a bordure engrailed, and stylised flowers in each corner. These are the arms of Archbishop Parker of Gloucester Cathedral. The fabric of the tile has straight sides or only a very slight bevel, plus a light green/yellow glaze over the slip and dark olive glaze over the body. (Group C – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The body of the tile is in relatively good condition, with just shallow damaged to the reverse (most likely from removal) and it mortar still stuck to its sides, along with some patches of glaze. However the decorative surface of the tile shows evidence of smoke damage from having been placed in the surround of a fireplace at the 'Porch House' in Lacock village in the mid 20th century. It is dark green and grey over the bulk of the tile with lighter grey areas where the slip lies and a small chip to the surface near one corner.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
