Summary
Floor Tile - Design 13 – The depicts a heraldic design, with a stag trippant (facing right) between three phaeons with a bordure engrailed, and stylised flowers in each corner. These are the arms of Archbishop Parker of Gloucester Cathedral. The fabric of the tile has straight sides or only a very slight bevel, plus a light green/yellow glaze over the slip and dark olive glaze over the body. (Group C – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The body of the tile is in good condition, but is unusually missing the scoop in the centre of the back. The surface of the tile is worn in areas but most of the slip remains with glaze on top. The glaze however is mottled in both yellow and green where it would normally be expected to be simply yellow. This is perhaps a result of an error during manufacture.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
