Summary
Floor tile - Design 8 - Fragment - This design shows scrolls and a vase below a double band with swags and scorpion tail tips. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 7, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). This is three of four fragments of a tile and this is the middle band. The fragment is in stable condition as the design is badly worn. A very small amount of slip remains at one edge but the rest of the fragment is very worn and there is no glaze remaining on the slip or the body. Near the centre is the majority of a circle which has been pressed or cut in to the tile. In the circle is some brown and red residue which could not be removed when cleaned. On the reverse is the majority of a single, central scoop. This fragment fits together with 1545811.43.1, .2 and .4.
