Summary
Floor tile - Design 8 - Fragment - This design shows scrolls and a vase below a double band with swags and scorpion tail tips. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 7, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). This is two of four fragments of a tile and this is the top left corner. The fragment is in stable condition as the design is obscured by brown coloured residue, which appears to have scrapped across the surface, and could not be removed when cleaned. Some design and slip is visible but there is also damage to the top layer of the tile. The rest of the fragment is very worn and there is no glaze remaining on the slip and a very small amount in a dent on the body. This fragment fits together with 1545811.43.1 and .3
