Summary
Floor Tile - Design 7 – Fragment - This design shows two dolphins either side of a tulip shaped vase with scorpion tail rising to the right. Fimbriated rosette at the bottom left hand corner plus part of arc and swag foliage. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). One of two known fragments and this is the top half of the tile. The tile fragment is in very good condition. The majority of the slip is present, but it is chipped at the edges and is glazed. On the body, there is a good layer of glaze, but it is thinning in patches. On the reverse is a section of a central scoop which is partially filled with mortar.
