Summary
Floor Tile - Design 7 – This design shows two dolphins either side of a tulip shaped vase with scorpion tail rising to the right. Fimbriated rosette at the bottom left hand corner plus part of arc and swag foliage. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The glaze is mostly lost with the remaining glaze appearing as patches of grey. The tile has a brown appearance and is worn over the whole surface with the loss the dolphin design and lower fimbriated scallop. The top right of the tile has been shaped by the removal of a rectangular section. Glaze remains on the edges of the cut away section suggesting that it was intentionally done during manufacture and prior to firing. A small part of the bottom left corner is chipped away.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
