Summary
Floor Tile - Design 7 – This design shows two dolphins either side of a tulip shaped vase with scorpion tail rising to the right. Fimbriated rosette at the bottom left hand corner plus part of arc and swag foliage. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The glaze remains across the surface of the tile. The tile is thinner than usual and from a maximum depth of 20mm at the bottom reduces to 12mm at the top. It is particularly worn around the edges. There is mortar on both left and right edges.
