Summary
Floor Tile - Design 7 – This design shows two dolphins either side of a tulip shaped vase with scorpion tail rising to the right. Fimbriated rosette at the bottom left hand corner plus part of arc and swag foliage. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. There is a shallow central scoop on the reverse of the tile. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. These are part of a set with designs 1(or 2), 3, 6, 8, 28 and 31.(Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Most of the shine of the glaze is lost and the surface is a dull grey colour. There is a number of worn patches over the surface with a number where the slip has been lost leaving indentations. The height of the tile is less than normal by the loss of the top edge. The rear of the top of the tile is also lost possibly suggesting that this occurred when installing in the Porch House fireplace. The right side has a substantial mortar layer.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown December 2009.
