Summary
Floor Tile - Design 4 - Fragment - WS initials either side of a scorpion with dolphins below and half rosettes to the side. There is sunflower type foliage at the base below the dolphins. The scorpion is vey articulated with details of eyes and crease around the mouth. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Design 4 and 5 both have rosettes and form a simple pattern with each other matching up the half rosettes. (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). One of two known parts of a tile and this fragment is the corner with the 'W'. The fragment is in very good condition. Most of the slip remains but there are several patches across the piece where it is missing. All the remaining slip is covered in glaze and the body is covered in a good layer of glaze. On the reverse is a section of a scoop.
