Summary
Floor Tile - Design 3 - W S initials either side of a scorpion with dolphins below. Scorpion is very articulated, details of eyes and crease around mouth. Olive green glazed body with a light green/cream inlay. From a collection of 10 designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Part of a carpet with designs 1 (or 2), 6, 7, 8, 28 and 31 (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile is in fair condition as much of the design has been damaged or obscured. One side has been blackened, potentially through heat damage and across the tile are areas of residue which could not be removed when cleaned. Where the design is visible, slip and glaze remain. On the reverse is a single, central scoop which is mostly filled with mortar
