Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady, possibly Miss Kelly, attributed to Sir Martin Archer Shee, PRA (Dublin 1769 – Brighton 1850) and previously attributed to Sir William Beechey RA (Burford 1753 – Hampstead 1839). A half-length portrait in profile to right, her head turned towards the spectator over her right shoulder, wearing a plum-coloured dress with white sash and fichu and a straw bonnet tied with a bow beneath her chin; her long powdered hair, tied with white ribbon ties down her back; landscape background. An identical version was exhibited by the Ehrich Galleries, New York in 1920.
Provenance
Said to have been bought in Ireland from a Mr James; Baron Lionel de Rothschild in 1873; thence by descent to Anthony de Rothschild (1887- 1961) by whom given to the National Trust with the house in 1949
