Summary
Oil painting on panel (oval), The News by Adriaen van Ostade (Haarlem 1610 –Haarlem 1685), signed and dated, mid-right: AV (in monogram) Ostade 1650. A peasnt in red and a woamn in blue are seated either side of a table, the one smking, the other reading a letter; a second man with a mug of beer lenas between them. A typical scene of Dutch low life with three elderly figures drinking, pipe-smoking and news-reading.
Provenance
Charles Heusch (c. 1777 - 1848) in 1842; whose collection Baron Lionel de Rothschild (1882 - 1942) bought en bloc; thence by decent until accepted in lieu of inheritance tax by HM Government and allocated to the National Trust, 2000.
