Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Hawking Party setting out by Philips Wouverman (Haarlem 1619 - Haarlem 1668), signed, lower right: Philips (in monogram) W, circa 1660. Outside a chateau, on the right in the centre a gentleman is being helped to mount a grey horse; near him are a lady and a gentleman on horseback, both with hawks or falcons on their arms, while in front a boy runs in front holding two greyhounds on a leash; behind is a groom watering two horses at a stream.

Duchess of Berry (Berri) sale, Paris, 4 April 1837, lot 53; Baron de Rothschild by 1842; Anthony de Rothschild (1887- 1961), by whom kept at Ascott, and given with the house and grounds to the National Trust in 1949
