Summary
Oil painting on panel, Cattle and Sheep in a Landscape by Nicolaes Berchem the elder (Haarlem 1620 – Amsterdam 1683), signed and dated, bottom left: Berchem f 1655. Some ruined masonry with a bull nearly on the skyline and cows and an ass beyond; a cow and four sheep are lying under a ruin in the foreground; a herdsman is partly seen at the left.
Provenance
Thomas French sale, Christie's 12 May 1855, lot 47 ( 'small upright landscape, with peasant keeping cattle and sheep on a rocky rising ground; an ass in the background. bt 'Nieu'. The name appears elsewhere in the auctioners copy of the catalogue and must signify the dealer Nieuwenhuys'), bought C. J. Nieuwenhuys (1799 - 1883); Baron Lionel de Rothschild; by inheritance to his son, Leopold de Rothschild (1845 -1917), by whom kept at Gunnersbury Park; his son, Anthony de Rothschild (1887- 1961), by whom kept at Ascott, and given with the house and grounds to the National Trust in 1949
