Summary
Oil painting on panel, Africa, manner of Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (Metz 1734 - Saint-Denis 1781), previously Jacques Vigoureux Duplessis (1680-1732). An allegorical representation of Africa. Ornate border of flowers and swags encloses a scene depicting a woman under an umbrella, which also shades a cupid holding a wreath. They look down on a hunstman and lion.
Provenance
Purchased by Ralph Stawell Dutton (1898–1985), 8th & last Lord Sherborne, from Old Masters Galleries, London (17 February 1966); bequeathed to the National Trust by Ralph Stawell Dutton, with the rest of the collections, house, gardens and estate of Hinton Ampner.
