Summary
Cabinet, inlaid with jasper, lapis lazuli and marble, ebony, marquetry of various woods, rosewood, gilt bronze mounts; plaques made in the Grand Ducal Workshops, Florence, about 1650-1700.
Full description
Birds and flowers composed of carefully chosen semiprecious stones set against a black background, was a typical choice of decoration in the second half of the 17th century. This cabinet is similar to examples known in other collections such as the V&A (London) Uffizi Museum (Florence), and the Hermitage Museum (St Petersburg).
Provenance
This is probably the same cabinet listed in Ralph’s purchase book as bought from J.W. Blanchard, Winchester, on 28 July 1960 for £120, just three months after the fire at Hinton Ampner.
