Summary
Table, inlaid with lapis lazuli, bloodstone and jaspers, gilt-bronze-mounted ebony, veneered low table; top probably made in Rome, about 1600-1700; base probably made in England, about 1900-60.
Full description
The rectangular top inset with twenty small panels and three large panels inlaid with geometric motifs is typical of Roman production where workshops specialized in traditional opus sectile mosaic work.
Provenance
According to notes in his purchase book, this is probably the table Ralph bought from Ronald Fleming (his interior designer and friend) for £60 in 1951. It is thought to have come from the Earl of Lonsdale, whose collections at Lowther Castle, Cumbria, were (in part) sold off in 1947.
