Summary
Oil painting on canvas, James, Duke of York (1633 – 1701) and Anne Hyde, Duchess of York (1637 – 1671), after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). Two portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York, afterwards King James II and the daughter of the Earl of Clarendon. He is seated on the left in brown doublet and breastplate and red scarf, holding a baton; she is seated on rioght in slate coloured dress, holding her husband's helmet; architectural landscape and curtain background.

Christie's 31 March 1939, lot 30; presumably bought in at 42 gns; collection of Henry Edward Hugh Pelham-Clinton-Hope, 9th Duke of Newcastle (1907-1988) of Clumber Park (at Shockerwick House, Bath) from whose estate given to the National Trust in 1991
