Anna Maria Brudenell was a notorious beauty. Her husband, the 11th Earl of Shrewsbury was killed in a duel over her by her love, the Duke Buckingham. She was reputedly present at this even, disguised as a page, and holding her lover’s horse. The prime version of this portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, although the three-quarter length from which it is derived is at Boughton.
