Caption
Anna Maria Brudenell was a notorious beauty. Her husband, the 11th Earl of Shrewsbury was killed in a duel over her by her love, the Duke Buckingham. She was reputedly present at this even, disguised as a page, and holding her lover’s horse. The prime version of this portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, although the three-quarter length from which it is derived is at Boughton. This picture was once part of the Onslow collection of historical portraits.

Oil painting on canvas, Lady Anna Maria Brudenell, Countess of Shrewsbury (1642-1702) after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), 18th century. Portrait of a woman with a large pearl earring in left ear and pearl necklace, with white chemise and red drapery pinned with pearls, diamonds and sapphires. In an oval with cabochon at bottom. The prime version of this is in the NPG (280); the three-quarter-length from which it is derived is at Boughton.
