Since the early 17th century, needlework was a formal part of a girl's education, and a good indication of whether she would make a good wife! On this work box, the raised work (or 3D effect) is cleverly achieved by padding with horsehair and lambs wool, and with ribbons, spangles and beads
Summary
Raised work embroidered box; the top showing a scene of the judgement of Paris, the edge of the lid decorated with animals and flowers separated by columns. Long sides of box decorated with mythological scenes divided by central column, with a silvered handle in the centre. The short sides similarly decorated, but on left side the division between mythological scenes made of silver braid, opening to disclose a shallow drawer and lifting top. The pink silk interior with silver braid border fitted with two scent bottles with pewter screw tops. A square ink vase and pounce pot, and diverse compartments. Bound with chased silver hinges. In wood and glass display case.
