Summary
[Destroyed in the fire of 2015] Oil painting on canvas, Harriers on the Merrow Downs near Clandon, attributed to James Seymour (London 1702 – London 1752), circa 1729-52. A scene near Guildford racecourse, with the grandstand in the background. The race took place every year, in Whitsun week, and the 3rd Lord Onslow was a great frequenter of them, and their arbiter. They were gradually eclipsed by more formal horse races at Epsom and Ascot. The last meeting took place in 1870.
Provenance
Purchased by the Ministry of Public Building and Works in 1963 from the 6th Earl of Onslow, Transferred to the National Trust in 1977.
