Summary
[Saved] Oil painting on canvas, Susannah Anlaby, Mrs Foote Onslow (d. 1715), in the manner of Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), circa 1685/90. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, seated, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a low-cut brown dress over a white chemise, a blue cloak with gold draped over her lap. In the background on the left is a fountain composed of a putto holding a dolphin upside-down, which acts as the water-spout. Mother of Speaker Arthur Onslow.
Provenance
Acquired by the Ministry of Works from Gwendolen, Countess of Iveagh, in 1956, and transferred to the National Trust by H.M. Treasury in 1977.
